His catch phrase is "Such Misfortune" because ironically what he perceives as misfortune for him is fortune or good luck for the watcher. Here are some examples:
For those who haven't watched the anime, the first two pictures above is perceived by the reader as good luck but in Touma's case, he considers it as misfortune as he is only being ordered around by Misaka Mikoto, the girl he's holding. As for the two panels below, it only adds up to Touma's misfortune.
In Academy City, aspiring students take lessons in science and apply them in real life, literally. As mentioned above, Touma is considered to be Level 0 because he no scientific prowess at all... or so everyone thought.
Touma lives in an apartment and is on hunger's edge. He had to save up money or he won't last until next month. As he was about to hang up his bed sheets outside, he found a nun on the balcony railings. She complained to Touma about being hungry and Touma wasn't really in a position to help her as he cannot even help himself. With such a pitiful face, Touma let her in and gave her the expired food in his fridge. She didn't complain as she said that food is still food. After eating, she introduced herself as Index, a nun from the Church of England.
Because of his kindness, she tells Touma of her situation. She was being chased by some people because she has the 103,000 grimoires that contain forbidden magic... inside her head. She had literally memorized the contents of those grimoires and is a potential threat as seen by the church. She explains that even though she is being chased by some magicians, she is wearing an impregnable armor clothing called "The Walking Church" and she'll be just fine after eating. Touma, as scientifically mannered as he is, doesn't believe in magic or in magicians or anything that is argued by science to be "Non-sense". Index, as a full fledged nun, insist that magic is real and God is real. Touma cannot completely argue for he has an unknown power himself; he can negate anything supernatural with his right hand. Index then reply that maybe that was the cause of his misfortune as his right hand negates all blessings from God as well as his good luck. But Touma still argues that magic is nonsense. An angry Index ran into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and dared Touma to attack her as her Walking Church will only absorb any magical or physical attack.
Of course Touma wouldn't do it and just refuted that if magic does exist, then his right hand would cancel her Walking Church. Index accepted his challenge and let him touch her.

To Aru Majutsu no Index is all about the magic side of Academy City and Touma defending Index from various church hierarchy such as Saints, God's Right Seat and many more.
What's funny about the anime is that even though the anime title is INDEX, Touma has the most screen time and Index is sometimes always left on the side lines. Also, fans have named Touma's final attack as "Touma Punch!" in the face because that is always his signature finish. All of his enemies are mostly unaware of his passive skill "Imagine Breaker" which negates anything supernatural with just his touch. Also, most of his enemies are women. Because he is always saving Damsels in Distress, he has unconsciously built his own harem
